Social Phobia, also known as Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), is a type of anxiety disorder in which an individual experiences excessive fear or anxiety in social situations where they may be evaluated, judged, or scrutinized by others.

What are the symptoms of social phobia?

People with social phobia have intense fear or anxiety in social situations where they may be exposed to scrutiny or judgment by others. This fear and anxiety can be so severe that it interferes with their ability to function in daily life and engage in normal social activities. They will avoid social situations, such as parties, public speaking, meeting new people, or enduring them with intense distress. Physical symptoms include blushing, sweating, trembling, palpitations and nausea. Reactions such as stuttering or speaking too quickly may also occur.

Example of Social Phobia/Social Anxiety Disorder

Let us take an example to illustrate the cognitive behavioural pattern of social anxiety disorder.

May is a 16-year-old schoolgirl who suffers from social phobia. One day when May was about to take off the minibus, a negative and subjective thought suddenly appeared in her mind, “Wouldn’t it be embarrassing if the driver couldn’t hear me shouting out to get off, or my voice being out of tune when I shout?” May started becoming nervous and restless, her heart beating faster and her whole body shaking. In the end. May did not dare to ask the driver to get off. She could only get off by following other passengers. Because of this unpleasant experience, May avoided taking minibuses and other social occasions that make her anxious.

It is important to note that experiencing some anxiety in social situations is normal, but it becomes a disorder when it significantly interferes with daily function and causes distress. Social phobia is a treatable condition, and a combination of therapy, medication and cognitive-behavioural therapy can help individuals manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of social phobia, it’s important to seek professional help.
