Endocrinology is a sub-specialty of Internal Medicine that deals with the endocrine system, which involves a collection of glands that produce hormones to regulate metabolism, growth and development, sex function and reproduction, and other functions. These glands include the thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, pituitary gland, hypothalamus, adrenal gland, pancreas, ovaries, and testicles. The endocrine system is of vital importance as it helps the body to maintain its internal balance. Diabetes mellitus, commonly know as diabetes, is a chronic disorder characterized by an abnormally high glucose level caused by insulin deficiency and/or insulin resistance. In Hong Kong, there are approximately 700 thousand people diagnosed with diabetes, which means out of 10 people, 1 person is a diabetic.
