Helicobacter Pylori (H. pylori) Breath Test/Carbon-13 Urea Breath Test

Helicobacter Pylori (H. pylori) Breath Test/Carbon-13 Urea Breath Test

What is the H.pylori breath test?

The Helicobacter pylori breath test, also known as the “Carbon-13 urea breath test”, is a non-invasive diagnostic method used to detect H. pylori infection. Its accuracy is comparable to that of gastric biopsy during endoscopy. H. pylori is a common bacteria found in the stomach that can cause gastric ulcers, gastritis, and other digestive disorders.

Who is suitable for the H. pylori breath test?

Individuals who suspect an H. pylori infection but do not exhibit any symptoms, such as those who have been in close contact with a family member diagnosed with the infection.

Symptoms of an H. pylori infection, including stomach pain, bloating, nausea, or ulcers.

Used as a follow-up measure after H. pylori treatment to assess the effectiveness of the treatment.

Principle and accuracy of the H. pylori breath test

The H.pylori bacteria, which reside in the stomach, release an enzyme called urease that breaks down urea. This process generates carbon dioxide, which is then exhaled through the lungs. During the breath test, the person being tested consumes a special solution containing Carbon-13-labeled urea. If H. pylori is present in the stomach, the urease produced by the bacteria breaks down the urea, leading to the production of ammonia and carbon dioxide. By measuring the level of Carbon-13 in the exhaled breath sample, it can be determined whether H. pylori is present. This test has a high accuracy rate of up to 90%.

The procedure for the H. pylori breath test

The H. pylori breath test is a safe, fast, and simple procedure that typically takes about 20 to 30 minutes, with results available within approximately 2 to 3 days.

  1. Within one hour prior to the test, you should refrain from eating any food or drinking anything, including water.
  2. During the test, the individual exhales into a balloon-like bag.
  3. They then drink a solution containing Carbon-13-labeled urea.
  4. After a 10-minute wait, a second breath sample is collected.

Precautions for the H. pylori breath test

  • The Helicobacter pylori breath test is not recommended for individuals who have previously undergone gastric surgery.
  • Fasting is required for 6 hours before the test.
  • Antibiotics should be discontinued for 2 weeks prior to the test.
  • High-potency gastric medications, including acid-suppressing drugs, should be discontinued for 4 weeks before the test.
